CommuniCon is a convention for Community fans. It was organized by Community fan and corporate lawyer Gillian Morshedi in 2012 and made its debut the following year. Cast and crew of "Community" along with creator Dan Harmon have appeared in past conventions. It's inaugural event was titled "CommuniCon: Intro to Communal Conventions" and held on February 9 and 10 in 2013. Another convention was held later that same year on October 12-13 with a third scheduled to take place on October 25-26 in 2014.

Creation

Communicon poster

Event organizer Gillian Morshedi explained how she was inspired to create CommuniCon:

I started CommuniCon because I really feel like I’ve become friends with other fans over Twitter, and we all feel a bit exhausted by what the show has been through the past few seasons, with low ratings, and multiple delays, and hiatuses. We all love the show, and feel connected to it, and to the cast and crew, and, most importantly to each other. So, the idea of all getting together just seemed really wonderful. Plus, as with everything we do, part of it is just to let the cast and writers and crew know how much we appreciate them. I’m someone who has always loved television and loving things, especially funny things. I’m originally from Houston, but I now live in San Francisco. I was a corporate litigator for five years, and recently quit to take some time off and decide what to do next.

Harmon twitter

A tumblr site and twitter account were created specifically to help promote the event. Show creator Dan Harmon learned of the event, tweeted about it and also agreed to attend. He was given a live microphone and 90 minutes to talk and discussed the shows origins, his philosphy about what it and the fandom who have embraced about it and what he feels the show ultimately represents.

When I pitched the show, I was pitching a very meta story about an *sshole that learned to love strangers...I knew it was meta at the time, but I had no idea how meta it was going to get... I was pitching a story about a guy who, like me, had gone to community college and had, at one point, been invited to be part of a study group that he didn't want to be a part of, because he had nothing to gain from it. ...I think the most important thing you can know is that you want to be a part of all the other individuals. You don’t want to be alone. There’s a personality disorder for every single thing you can name under the sun. There are people who put entire jars of peanut butter up their butt and there are people who are sexually attracted to cats. But there is no one who wants to be alone.
