Bio
John Goodman is an American film, television, and stage actor. He was born on June 20, 1952, in Affton, Missouri to Leslie Goodman and Virginia Goodman. His father died of a heart attack only a few years after his birth leaving Virginia to raise John and his siblings on by herself. After graduating Affton High School in 1970, he got a football scholarship to Southwest Missouri State University. When a serious injury forced Goodman to change his major he started studying drama and theater. Goodman eventually graduated with his theater degree in 1975 and went to New York to pursue an acting career. He got a few jobs doing commercials and voice over work supporting himself by waiting tables and bar tending. By the 1980's he managed to land a string of TV and film appearances. In 1985 he was cast in the David Byrne comedy "True Stories" and followed that with more high profile parts in "The Big Easy" and "Raising Arizona".
The latter film would start his long association with the filmmaking duo the Coen Brothers and as he would later go on to star in four more of their films. In 1987 he was cast in his most recognizable role as "Dan Conner" in the Rosanne Barr ABC sitcom "Roseanne". He played the part from 1988â1997 and won a Golden Globe Award for his performance in 1993. After leaving the show he continued doing feature films such as "Monsters, Inc." and "The Big Lebowski". He also pursued work sporadically on television appearing in a few short lived series such as "Normal, Ohio", "Father of the Pride" and "Center of the Universe". He had a steady stream of work in both TV and films in both major and guest starring roles. One of those roles was on "Community" in 2011 where he played the recurring character of Vice Dean Robert Laybourne" in the shows third season. Having contributed to more than 50 films, Goodman has also won two American Comedy Awards and hosted Saturday Night Live fourteen times.
