Leonard Rodriguez (previously Briggs) is an elderly man who is studying business at Greendale Community College. He leads a rowdy, disobedient band of elderly Greendale students called the Hipsters. The Hipsters are named so because they all apparently have hip replacements. Among Leonard's various acts of rebellion are skinny dipping, the school party, vandalizing the walls with graffiti, and going on joy rides. When Jeff retrieves Pierce from jail in "Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples", it is mentioned that no one ever comes to pick him up anymore. His rambunctious attitude got him banned from a local Denny's as mentioned in "For a Few Paintballs More." He changed his last name to "Rodriguez" to win the Hispanic vote in the Greendale student elections. As of "Documentary Filmmaking: Redux" he appears to have kept "Rodriguez" as his last name. He has to be around 100 years old because he mentions in the Season 2 finale that he was in the Little Rascals (a popular show in the 20s and 30s). He is portrayed by Richard Erdman.
Leonard has a rather antagonistic relationship with the majority of the study group. His rude remarks typically elicit a response of "Shut up, Leonard" from Jeff or others. During his last three years at Greendale, he has become a notable member of the student body, having run for student president and having been selected to take part in the inaugural run of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Space Simulator.
Leonard has at least one son, who informed Jeff of Leonard's gambling addiction during Family Day. After his first year of community college was complete, he bragged that there had been only a few pregnancy scares. He has prescription socks as well as a YouTube channel dedicated solely to reviewing food and answering questions about food. He is the member of the Whig Party and has fought in several wars, claiming to remember all of them.
Leonard is part of one of the best-known running gags on the show. It usually involves an insulting exchange between Leonard and Jeff.
