The paintball shotgun is the weapon of choice for The Black Rider, a mysterious participant of the 2011 Greendale Paintball games. In keeping with the western theme of the contest, it's a version of the double barreled coach gun made famous in the Old West. It sacrifices accuracy and long range for power and is very effective up close. He carried two of the firearms and had them both strapped to his back along with two crisscrossing bandoliers that held the shotgun shell ammunition for the weapons. The Black Rider would often dual wield the shotguns during the competition to maximum effect earning himself a fearsome reputation. The paintball shotguns first appearance was in the Season Two episode "A Fistful of Paintballs".
|In the study group's second year at Greendale, another paintball competition is held on campus. Among the new contestants was a self proclaimed gun-for-hire who quickly made a name for himself by eliminating many competitors. His legend grew and the other contestants began referring to him as "The Black Rider". His preferred firearms to use were a pair of Paintball shotguns. He was first seen using the weapons after having eliminated Pavel from the contest using only his paintball pistols. He pulls out and uses his shotguns to deal with Annie, Abed and Jeff whom he runs across inside the library. They barley avoid his initial volley of fire and managed to escape only after he took some time to reload his shotgun.
|The next time The Black Rider engages the same trio from the study group he was caught off guard and didn't have time to draw his shotguns. It's assumed the shot guns were instrumental when The Black Rider launched a one man assault on the safe haven in the cafeteria known as Fort Hawthorne. He later returned there to find the study group confronting Pierce Hawthorne over his recent betrayal. He interrupted just as Annie was having a paintball gun show down with Pierce. Jeff then challenged the Black Rider to a duel as well and all the combatants faced off in a four way draw. Pierce faked a heart attack and despite the study group's warnings, The Black Rider went to his aid. Pierce then shot him at point blank range eliminating him from the competition. He then grabbed one of the Black Rider's shotguns and made his escape declaring himself a winner and officially quitting the study group ("A Fistful of Paintballs").
