In their first year at Greendale, Troy and Abed are lab partners in a Biology science class. One of their assignments is to take care of a mouse and teach it to respond to a particular song. Unfortunately, Troy is afraid of mice, so the assignment doesn't go smoothly. The mouse escapes from his cage and runs out of the lab. Abed asks Troy to help him find the mouse before it gets exterminated. Troy refuses and Abed goes off alone. He finds it inside an air vent in the hallway, but it refuses to leave even after Abed starts singing. Troy then appears and joins Abed in a duet of the song. It was first heard in the Season One episode "Environmental Science".

Original version[]
Somewhere out there
beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me
and loving me tonight
Somewhere out there
someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another
in that big somewhere out there
And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky
Somewhere out there
if love can see us through
Then we'll be together
somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true
And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky
Somewhere out there
if love can see us through
Then we'll be together
somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true
And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky
Somewhere out there
if love can see us through
Then we'll be together
somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

Trivia[]
Abed names the mouse Fievel after the hero of the 1986 animated film "An American Tail". The song he chose to condition the mouse to was the main theme song of the movie "Somewhere Out There" written by James Horner. Within the movie itself it is sung by Fievel played by Phillip Glasser and his sister Tanya (played by Betsy Cathart). The official version was recorded by Linda Rondstat and James Ingram.
Comic Con[]
At the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, the Community cast and crew held a panel for it's fans. At the request of one of them, Danny and Donald did an impromptu performance of "Somewhere Out There".
